Position:          Family Support Specialist

Location:        WINGS Domestic Violence Safe House Metro (Chicago)

Reports to:      Manager of Children Services

Objective:       To provide support and encouragement to children in ways that enhance their lives, facilitating movement towards independence, wellness, and safety.

 

General Responsibilities: 

To assess, implement, and oversee the activities that support the needs of children in the Safe House.  To teach, model, and support women in the development of life skills.   

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Supportive Services:

  • Work with the Family Advocates and House Advocates to provide a continuum of services for the children at the Safe House.
  • Provide activities and groups for children that enhance their social and emotional well- being. 
  • Assist child residents with homework activities.
  • Assist in a schedule of agency-wide Enrichment Activities to include group, family and children's activities; may involve work with collaborative agencies/groups.
  • Interact with clients in the community areas of the Safe House and role model social skills, conflict resolution, parenting and other skills of daily living.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities related to house policies and chores.

 

Advocacy:

Provide crisis intervention and counseling, referrals, and complete intakes with callers on the crisis line.

Facilitate supportive and educational groups for child residents as it relates to domestic violence, using a non-judgmental approach.

  • Identify resident needs and communicate these needs to the responsible staff member in order to secure donations and services.

           

Administrative:

  • Maintain resident service files at the WINGS Domestic Violence Safe House Metro.
  • Ensure documentation in each resident record is accurate, current, and in accordance with agency policies and funding requirements.
  • Attend weekly supervision, participate in weekly group supervision, and attend All Staff meetings.
  • Network with area agencies through collaborations and various meetings in the community.
  • Conduct, attend, and participate in training and education.   
  • Monitor and maintain a safe and healthy living environment as defined by Safe House's safety and health manual.
  • Immediately report child abuse/neglect to Department of Children and Family Services as mandated by law and in accordance with agency procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Social Services, Child Development, Psychology, or related field, or working toward degree.
  • Knowledge of domestic violence issues a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to successfully complete Domestic Violence 40 hour Training (WINGS will provide, if needed). 
  • Willingness and ability to successfully complete CPR and First Aid certification (WINGS will provide).
  • Must have strong interpersonal, problem-solving organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to providing a safe, non-judging environment where families can identify their strengths and understand the impact of domestic violence.
  • Ability to provide active listening, encouragement and counseling to residents while maintaining personal and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to create a supportive environment in which residents feel safe and able to engage in creating goals.  Ability to support resident progress toward achievement of their service plan, goals, and independence.
  • Ability to accept, understand and relate sensitively to people of varied social, economic, racial, cultural, and experiential backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to the special needs of children.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the success and potential of all women and children.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy and services of WINGS, and a commitment to women's issues, with a belief that families can live in a peaceful and non- violent environment.
  • A willingness and ability to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure the complete staffing of our 24 hour facility.

 

Type: Part Time 20 Hours/Week, evenings and weekends.
