Position: FamilyAdvocate 

Reports To: Manager of Safe House Services

Overview: WINGS favors a strengths based approach to working with residents. The Family Advocate position involves working with victims of domestic violence and homeless women and children, our "residents".  The FA is an entry level position with duties that include; supportive services and case management to women and children clients of the agency in ways that enhance their life and assist them towards more independent living and wellness. WINGS promotes self- reliance through an empathic and caring atmosphere.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities including, but not limited to:
Conducts intake interviews
Assess each woman and child upon entry to the program for needs and strengths and identify the level of need for parenting training, medical/dental, social, educational needs and support
Provides crisis intervention activities with women and children
Conducts case management activities such as conflict management, budgeting, parenting and life skills
As directed, provide supervision for the 40 hour training and CEU
Develops a service plan by meeting with clients weekly or as needed to monitor and revise the plan
Assists clients in application and follow up of mainstream benefits
Provides referrals and resources
May co-facilitates weekly house meeting to discuss communal living issues; may co-facilitate women's support and/or children's group, as needed
Assists clients in locating sustainable long term housing
Provides follow-up services as needed
Collaborates with outside agencies in their work on clients' service plans
Provides services in accordance with the Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Professionals code of ethics
Responds to security concerns appropriately. Documents observations and actions taken.
Identifies repairs and/or household needs. Coordinate with Maintenance or others to ensure needs are met
Supervises and coordinate activities related to chores
Facilitates safety of residents by doing periodic inspections, teaching fire safety and conducting regular fire drills
Completes and maintain case notes and documents service statistics
Using the appropriate forms request volunteers and donations as necessary
Monitors compliance with WINGS Rights and Responsibilities statement.
As required, attend community resource meetings to learn of potential resources
Performs office tasks as necessary
Immediately report child abuse to Department of Children and Family Services
Hotline Response for Safe House Family Advocates ONLY
Conducts intake interviews with hotline callers, as appropriate.
Responds to hotline callers during assigned shift and acts as the back-up hotline responder. Responds to callers by providing support, education about domestic violence, safety planning, WINGS service information and/or referrals. Assess appropriateness of services needed (i.e.; Safe House, Transitional Housing, Counseling, etc). Documents calls and shelter hotline information logs.
Rotates in meal preparation for the home
Completes household duties, as assigned
Processes and sort donations to the homes

Qualifications and Characteristics:
Education- Bachelor's Degree in human services, social service, counseling, a closely related field, or equivalent job experience
Experience- Prefer a minimum of 1-3 years of experience in social services and the ability to work efficiently and independently
Training 40-hour domestic violence training and CPR & First Aid Certification and commitment to complete within 3 months of hire date
Must hold ICDVP credential or pass test within one year of hire
Technical Communication and documentation skills. Remains cognizant of current developments in the field of domestic violence
Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access preferred
Social Skills- Must be able to respond appropriately in emergency situations; must be able to function well with minimal supervision.
Leadership Skills- Must demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, good judgment, and commitment to teamwork.
Flexibility-must be willing to work variable hours including evening, weekends, and holidays, serve as a rotating on call staff, and with minimal notice work at any of the locations within the Wings Program
Transportation-must have own transportation, valid driver's license, good driving record, automobile insurance
Physical Skills-must be able to operate common household and office equipment., must be able to climb stairs, hear and/or see fire and intruder alarms, must be able to lift 50-pound child
